வட பழனி கோயில் பக்தர் ஒருவரின் கருத்து இது. பதிலளித்தவர் ‘சூத்திரர்’.
“நானே சொல்லக் கூடாது தான்… ஆனா வேற வழியில்லே. இன்னிக்கு ப்ராமின்ஸ் எவன் யோக்கியம்னு சொல்றீங்க? வெளியில தான் கோயில் காரியம் புண்ணியம்னு எல்லாம் நினைக்கிறாங்க. உள்ளே வந்து பார்த்தா தான் புரியும். பெரியார் கேட்ட கேள்விகளுக்கு ஒழுங்கா எவனாலயும் பதில் சொல்ல முடியலை. அதானே எல்லாரும் அந்தப் பக்கமா போறாங்க? இவங்களாலே இன்னிக்கு கடவுள் பக்தியே குலைஞ்சி போச்சிது. எத்தனை ஸ்காண்டல் வெளியே வந்திட்டு இருக்கு தெரியுமில்லே? சின்ன பசங்களை கோயிலுக்கு கூப்டா ‘போப்பா வேற வேலையில்லே’ அப்படின்னு ஃபோனை நோண்டிட்டே பதில் சொல்றான். இந்த ஆன்மீக சிஸ்டத்தோட அடிப்படையிலயே ஏதோ பிரச்சினை இருக்கு”
எம்மிடம் சலித்துக் கொண்ட மயிலை கபாலீஸ்வரர் கோயில் பக்தர் ஒரு பார்ப்பனர். ஓய்வு பெற்ற பேராசிரியர். முசுலீம்களுக்கும் இந்துக்களுக்கும் இடையிலான சமன்பாட்டை பராமரிக்க ஆர்.எஸ்.எஸ் அமைப்பு தேவை என்று எம்மிடம் வாதிட்டவர் – அதே குரலில் மத உரிமைகள் தடுக்கப்படும் போது மதமாற்றம் நடக்கத்தானே செய்யும் என்றும் கூறுகிறார். பார்ப்பனர்களைப் பற்றி மிக கடுமையான வார்த்தைகளில் ‘அர்ச்சிக்கிறார்’.
வினவு செய்தியாளர் குழுவினர் பொங்கலன்றும் அதற்கு மறுநாளும் சென்னையின் பிரசித்தி பெற்ற கோயில்களில் அர்ச்சகர் வழக்கு குறித்தும் ஆகம விதிகள் பற்றியும் எடுத்த கருத்துக் கணிப்பின் முடிவுகள் சில உண்மைகளை உணர்த்துகின்றன. கருத்துக்கணிப்பிற்காக வெகுமக்களின் கோயில்கள் என்கிற வகையில் வடபழனி முருகன் கோயிலையும் திருவேற்காடு கருமாரியம்மன் கோயிலையும் தெரிவு செய்திருந்தோம். பார்ப்பன – மேல்நிலை ஆதிக்க சாதியினர் புழங்கும் கோயில்கள் என்கிற அடிப்படையில் மயிலை கபாலீஸ்வரர் கோயில் மற்றும் திருவல்லிக்கேணி பார்த்தசாரதி கோயிலையும் தெரிவு செய்தோம்.
கருத்துக்கணிப்பை அலசுவதற்கு முன் முடிவுகளைப் பார்க்கலாம்:

இந்நான்கு கோவில்களில், வடபழனி, மயிலை மற்றும் திருவேற்காடு கோவிலில் சந்தித்த பக்தர்கள் தாராளமாக பேச முன்வந்தனர். பார்த்தசாரதி கோவிலைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் வெளிப் பிரகாரத்தில் ஓய்வாக அமர்ந்திருந்த பக்தர்கள் கூட பேசத் தயங்கினர், சிலரோ வெளிப்படையாக பதிலளிக்க முடியாது என்று சொல்லி முகத்தைத் திருப்பிக் கொண்டனர். நான்கு கோவில்களைச் சுற்றிலும் உள்ள தரைக்கடை, வண்டிக்கடை வியாபாரிகள் மத்தியில் பார்ப்பனர்கள் மேல் கடுமையான விமர்சனங்கள் உள்ளன.
“திருட்டுப் பசங்க சார். சீசன்னாக்க உள்ளேர்ந்து அவுனுங்களே மாலைய கொண்டாந்து குடுத்துடுவாங்க. ஒரே மாலை பூ உதிர்ர வரைக்கும் ஒரு நாலஞ்சி ரவுண்டு போயிட்டு வரும்” என்றார் திருவேற்காடு கோயிலின் வெளியே தேனீர் கடை நடத்தி வருபவர்.
“எல்லாத்துக்கும் காசு தாங்க. 100 ரூபா குடுத்த சாமி மாலை தருவாங்க. 500 ரூபா குடுத்தா பெரிய மாலைய கழட்டி குடுப்பாங்க. காசு குடுத்தா நீங்க என்ன சாதின்னெல்லாம் பார்க்காம கருவறைக்கு உள்ளே விடுவாங்க. விடறது என்ன… கூட்டிட்டு போயி சாமி மடிலயே ஒக்காத்தி வைச்சாலும் வைப்பாங்க. ஆகமம் பத்தியெல்லாம் தெரியாது… ஆனா நான் இதே ஊர்ல ஐம்பது வருசமா இருக்கேன்… எங்க அப்பா தாத்தா காலத்துல இங்கெ அய்யிருங்க பூசை செய்யலை.. பேமசு ஆன பின்னாடி தான் அய்யருங்க வந்தாங்க” என்கிறார் இன்னொரு வியாபாரி.
திருவேற்காடு கோவிலில் உழைக்கும் நடுத்தர வர்க்கத்தைச் சேர்ந்த நடுத்தர வயது மற்றும் வயதான பெண்கள் நிறைய பேரைக் காண முடிந்தது. இவர்களிடம் பெண்களை கருவறைக்குள் அனுமதிப்பது தொடர்பான கேள்விக்கு எதிர்மறையான பதிலே வந்தது.
“அய்யய்யோ.. பொட்டப் பசங்களையா உள்ளே விடனும்னு சொல்றீங்க.. அது பெரிய பாவம் தம்பி. கங்கைல குளிச்சாலும் அந்த பாவம் போகாதுப்பா…” என்று பதறினார் கருமாரியம்மன் கோவிலில் நாங்கள் சந்தித்த வீரம்மாள் என்கிற பெண்மணி. அதே கோவிலில் நாங்கள் சந்தித்த அவர் வயதை ஒத்த பலராலும் அந்தக் கேள்வியைத் தாங்கிக் கொள்ள முடியவில்லை. 40 வயதுக்கு உட்பட்ட பெண் பக்தர்கள், “மாதவிடாய்க் காலம் முடிந்த பெண்களை அனுமதிக்கலாம்” என்று தெரிவித்தனர்.
அதே நேரம், பெண்களை கருவறைக்குள் அனுமதிப்பது தொடர்பாக மயிலை கபாலி கோவிலில் சந்தித்த பக்தர்கள் (பார்ப்பனர்கள், பார்ப்பனரல்லாதவர்கள் உள்ளிட்டு) பெருவாரியாக ஆதரித்தனர். கடந்த ஓரிரண்டு ஆண்டுகளில் கோவிலுக்கு வரும் பக்தர்கள் கூட்டம் வெகுவாக குறைந்திருப்பதாக சலித்துக் கொள்வோர் நிறைய இருந்தனர். பால், சாதி வேறு பாடுகளை இறுக்கமாக பிடித்துக் கொண்டிருப்பது இதற்கு மேலும் தேவையற்றது என்பதை கபாலீஸ்வரர் கோவிலில் சந்தித்த பார்ப்பனர்கள் சிலரே தெரிவித்தனர்.
”நல்லா புரோகிதம் செய்யக்கூடிய விவரம் தெரிஞ்ச வாத்தியார்களே இப்ப குறைஞ்சி போயிட்டாங்க. இப்ப புரோகிதம் செய்யறவங்களும் எல்லா முறைகளையும் தெரிஞ்சிட்டு வர்ரதில்லே. இதெல்லாம் இப்ப பாஷன் இல்ல சார். கோவில்ல அர்ச்சனை செய்யறவங்களுக்கெல்லாம் என்ன சம்பளம்னு நினைக்கிறீங்க? படிச்சிட்டு ஆன்சைட் போயி ஒரு நாள் சம்பாதிக்கிற காசை விட இவாளெல்லாம் ஒரு மாசம் பூரா வேர்வைல ஊறி சம்பாதிக்கிற காசு கம்மி தான் தெரியுமா?” கபாலி கோவிலில் சந்தித்த ஹரிஹரன் நீட்டிக் கொண்டே போனார். நாங்கள் இடைமறித்தோம்.
”சரி, அதான் வருமானம் இல்லைன்னு சொல்றீங்களே அப்ப வேற சாதிக்காரர்களும் இந்த வேலையை எடுத்துக்க முன்வந்தால் விடலாம் தானே?”
”வருமானம் இல்லைன்றதாலே தான் சொல்றேன். எதுக்கு நீங்கெல்லாம் இந்த சின்ன சம்பாத்தியத்துக்கு போட்டிக்கு வர்றேள்? நல்ல படிங்கோ.. பாரின் போங்கோ” ஹரிஹரனின் வயது எழுபதுக்கும் மேல்.
70 வயதைக் கடந்த பார்ப்பனர்களின் குரல்கள் ஒரே தன்மையுடன் இருந்தது என்றால் நடுத்தர வயது மற்றும் இளைய வயதுடையோரின் குரல்களில் கொஞ்சம் ஜனநாயகம் ஏறியிருந்தது.
“பிரதர்! கோயிலைப் பத்தியெல்லாம் எழுதி என்ன சாதிக்கப் போறீங்க, அதுக்குப் பதிலா இங்க நடக்குறதப் பத்தி எழுதுங்க! அங்க நிக்கிறாங்க(அர்ச்சகர்கள்) பாத்தீங்களா ! இவங்க மோசடிக்கு ஒரு அளவே இல்ல! பாருங்க நம்ம கடவுள கும்புடுறதுக்கு தட்டுல உண்டியல் போடனும், அப்புறம் டோக்கன் வேற, இதுல ஸ்பெஷல் டோக்கன் வாங்குனா வரிசையில நிக்காம உடனே போயி பாத்துடலாமாம் …. காசு கொடுத்து வந்து பாருன்னு கடவுளா சொன்னான்?” இது ஐம்பதைக் கடந்த பார்ப்பனர் மகாதேவனின் கருத்து.
எம்மிடம் ஆர்வத்தோடு பேசிய அவரிடம், இந்து மதத்தில் பிறப்பின் அடிப்படையில் ஏற்றத்தாழ்வு இருப்பதால் தானே மத மாற்றங்கள் நடக்கின்றன என்று கேட்டோம். அதற்கு அவர்,
”விவேகானந்தரும் இங்கே சாதி ஏற்றத்தாழ்வுகள் மிக அதிகம்னு சொல்லி இருக்கார். ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட சாதிக்காரர்களை உள்ள வரக்கூடாதுன்னு தடுத்தா எப்படி கோயில்ல கும்பிட வருவார்கள்? மதம் மாறத்தான் செய்வார்கள். முதல்ல இந்து மதத்துல உள்ள எல்லாரும் சரிசமம்-னு சட்டம் கொண்டு வரனும்” என்றார்.
இந்தக் கோவில்களில் இருபதுகளில் உள்ள இளைஞர்களைப் பார்ப்பது அரிதாகவே இருந்தது அதிலும், பார்ப்பனரல்லாத சாதியைச் சேர்ந்த இளைஞர்களை தேடித் தான் பிடிக்க வேண்டியிருந்தது. வடபழனி கோவில் பின்புற பிரகாரத்தில் நான்கு இளைஞர்களைப் பிடித்தோம். பள்ளியில் இறுதியாண்டு படிக்கும் மாணவர்கள். ஆளுக்கொரு தொடுதிரை கைப்பேசியை வைத்துக் கொண்டு ஏதோ நோண்டிக் கொண்டிருந்தனர். வின்சென்ட் மேல்நிலைப் பள்ளியில் படிப்பவர்கள்.
இவர்கள் அர்ச்சகர் வழக்கு பற்றியோ, ஆகம விதிகள் பற்றியோ கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கவில்லை. பிரச்சினை பற்றி நாம் விளக்கிய பின் கொந்தளித்து விட்டனர்.
“துட்டு வாங்கிட்டு தானே பூஜை செய்யறாங்க. அதான் யாரு வேணா செய்யலாமே” – அபிஷேக்
“மச்சி அது நம்ப துட்டுடா.. நம்மளாண்ட பிச்சை எடுத்துனு நம்பளையே உள்ள விடமாட்டானா?” – கணேஷ்
“இவனுங்க கைல துட்டு குடுக்க கூடாதுடா..” – நந்தா
சமஸ்கிருதம் தேவபாஷை எனப்படுவதையும் தமிழ் நீச பாசை எனப்படுவதையும் பற்றிக் கேட்ட போது அவர்களின் எதிர்வினையில் மேலும் சூடு ஏறியது
“தமிழ்நாட்டுல பொறுக்கித் தின்னுகினு தமிழையே தப்பு சொல்றானுங்களா? தெர்த்தி விடனும் பாஸ்” – ஹரி
“சொம்மா வாய்ல வந்தத உளரிக் கொட்றான்.. கேட்டா அதான் தேவபாசையா?” – நந்தா.
இவர்கள் கோவிலுக்கு வந்ததைப் பற்றிக் கேட்டோம்.
“லீவு சார்… வீட்ல ஒரே போரடிச்சிது.. அதான் சும்மா வந்தோம்”
”சாமி கும்பிட்டாச்சா?”
“அதெல்லாம் வந்த ஒடனேயே ஒரு அட்னென்ஸ் போட்டுட்டோம்”
“அடிக்கடி வருவீங்களா?
“அய்யய்யே.. எப்பனா போரடிச்சா வருவோம்”
மதம், அரசியல் குறித்த கேள்விகளுக்கு பெரும்பாலும் தெரியாது என்றே பதிலளித்தனர் இளைஞர்கள். சிறுவர்கள் மட்டுமே பெற்றோருடன் வந்தனர்… இளைஞர்களை குடும்பத்தோடு பார்க்க முடியவில்லை. வெகு சிலர் மட்டும் தம் வயதை ஒத்தவர்களோடு கும்பலாக வந்திருந்தனர். அந்த வருகைக்கும் ஆன்மீகத்துக்கும் எந்த தொடர்புமில்லை. ஏன் கோவிலுக்கு வந்தீர்கள் என்று கேட்டதற்கு இப்பிரிவினர் சொன்ன பதில் “சும்மா டைம் பாசுக்கு”
நாற்பதுகளில் இருந்தவர்களுக்கு ஓரளவு வழக்கு பற்றியும் அதன் பின்னணி பற்றியும் பரிச்சயம் இருந்தது. பெரும்பாலும் குடும்பமாக வந்திருந்தனர். இவர்கள் மத்தியில் பார்ப்பனர்கள் மேலான விமர்சன்ங்களும் தூக்கலாக இருந்தன. குறிப்பாக கோவிலில் தம்மை பார்ப்பனர்கள் மதிப்பதில்லை என்பதை குறிப்பிட்டுச் சொன்னார்கள்.
”நம்ம காசுல தான் கோயிலே நடக்குது. இதுல, நம்ம கிட்ட அவனுங்க கடு கடுன்னு மூஞ்சிய காட்றதும், ஒருமைல வா போ-ன்னு விரட்றதும்.. இதே காசு குடுங்க, தூக்கி வச்சி கொண்டாடுவானுங்க. நான் காசு குடுக்கிற பழக்கமில்ல. நம்ம சாமிய பார்க்க எதுக்கு காசு குடுக்கனும்? வெளியில நம்மை பார்த்தா மனுசனா மதிக்கிறான். சில சமயம் இந்த அவமானத்துக்கு பேசாம கோயிலுக்கே வராம விட்றலாம்னு தோணும். ஆனா, ஒரு விசேசம்னா வீட்ல எல்லாரும் குடும்பமா செலவில்லாமே வந்து போறதுக்கு இதானே இருக்கு?”
கருப்பு சட்டைகளையெல்லாம் அய்யப்ப பக்தர்களாக்கி விட்டோம் – சிவப்புச் சட்டைகளையெல்லாம் செவ்வாடை பக்தர்களாக்கி விட்டோம் என்று காலர் தூக்கி விட்டுத் திரியும் இந்துத்துவ கும்பல் சமீபத்தில் அதிகரித்திருக்கும் ’பக்தியின்’ தன்மை யாதென்று ஆய்வு செய்து பார்த்தார்களா என்பது தெரியவில்லை. பெரும்பாலான பக்தர்களுக்கு ’பக்தி’ ஒரு அனிச்சையான பழக்கமாகத் தான் இருக்கிறதே ஒழிய உணர்வுப் பூர்வமான பங்கேற்பு இல்லை. கருவறையில் நிலவும் பார்ப்பனர் ஆதிக்கம் பக்தர்களின் ஒப்புதலோடு நிலவவில்லை என்பதை கருத்துக் கணிப்பின் முடிவுகள் உணர்த்தியது என்றால், காவி கும்பலின் பெருமை பீற்றலின் தராதரம் என்பதை பக்தர்களின் கருத்துக்கள் உணர்த்தியது.
அதே நேரம் பார்ப்பனமயாக்கலின் செல்வாக்கில் மக்கள் இன்னும் இருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதையும் பார்க்கிறோம். பெண்களுக்கு அனுமதி இல்லை என்பது அதற்கு ஒரு சான்று! அதே நேரம் இந்து மதத்தில் மரபு ரீதியாக இருக்கும் அடிமைத்தனங்களை மக்கள் உரிய பொருளில் புரிந்திருக்கவில்லை. பல விசயங்கள் அவர்களுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. அதே நேரம் எல்லாரும் அர்ச்சகராவதில் என்ன பிரச்சினை என்று எளிமையாக கேட்கவும் செய்கிறார்கள். பார்ப்பன இந்துமதத்தின் அநீதிகளை உரிய முறையில் மக்களிடம் பிரச்சாரம் செய்யும் போது உச்சநீதிமன்றமோ இல்லை சங்கபரிவாரங்களோ மக்களின் கோபத்திற்கு பதில் சொல்ல முடியாது என்பது மட்டும் உண்மை.
இந்தக் கருத்துக் கணிப்பு நான்கு கோவில்களிலும் சுமார் 200 நபர்களிடம் எடுக்கப்பட்டது. சாதி, வர்க்கம், பால் ரீதியான பிரிவினைகளில் அனைத்தும் 50 : 50 என்று இருக்குமாறு தெரிவு செய்யப்பட்டது. குடியிருப்புகள், ஏனைய பொது இடங்களை விட கோவில்களே பொருத்தமாக இருக்குமென்று முடிவு செய்யப்பட்டது. இறுதியாக இந்துமுன்னணி சொல்வது போல இங்கே பக்தியும், ஆன்மீகமும் செழித்து வளர்ந்துவிட்டதாக சொல்வது கடைந்தெடுத்த பொய். மக்களுக்கு கோவிலும், வழிபாடும் ஏதோ தவிர்க்க முடியாத ஒரு சடங்கு, வாழ்க்கைப் பிரச்சினைகளுக்கு இப்படியும் ஒரு சுமாரான தீர்வு உண்டு என்பதைத் தாண்டி பெரிய பிடிப்பு இல்லை.

Good observation Raman. No quality books. No encouragement given to children to try their hand in biology, chemistry or astronomy. They were given two choices: study or watch TV. When they grow up, they have movies and places like beach, temples etc. I really miss Soviet Union. They made lot of books which were intended to kindle the thirst for knowledge among youths. Corporate media and commercial books won’t do. In a parallel universe I wish that the USSR is still around having its own satellite channel and Internet alternates.
Raman, from what you say in Vinavu comments, I assume that you read lot of books. Did you start reading from your childhood? Have you read USSR books (sold by NCBH)? Do see there is a vacuum in science, literature and education left by USSR? Do you think that commercialized system can fill that space?
Yes, I started reading from second grade. Poonthalir/Amar chitra kadha kindled my reading habits. USSR books which got were all about “Koottu pannai” like social engineering which I was not able to value at that time.I dint get any science related USSR books. Most of the books I read were all fictional books while in India.
I still feel bad, I dint use my college library. I was contempt with good marks.
There are many valuable books in foreign countries for kids and others. But we have created a generation with no reading habit. so parents now are not searching for these kind of books for their kids.
Sometime back I read “Thulir” magazine , but I was not able to subscribe at that time. They have bureaucracy and not accepting online orders…
These kind of books should be made available to young children.
Ramanujam was made mathematician by public library and not by the education system .
Faraday was made physicist by his reading on the job at book binding company and not by education system.
Unfortunately our culture doesnt value libraries,It is very sad to see the sorry state of Anna library.
Books like “Thanneer En eeramaaga irukirathu?”, “Miracles on Wheels”, “Vaanveliyil Natchathirangal”, “Folk Tales from USSR” (many books), there are hell lot of them still in my home. Some or lost to buggy borrowers. Some are torn and soiled. I feel guilty for those books. I feel like that I have destroyed (failed to preserve) one of the rarest products of human civilization. The USSR is no more. Those books will never again be on print. Even today, many such books are just sitting idle in my shelves. I am planning to scan them all and make them public.

If youngsters read “Thalaivarin sattamandra peruraigal”they will understand the force of logical arguments.Those kind of arguments between K.Vinayagam (Cong)and Anna(CM)is unheard nowadays.Do you mean to say that there are no worthy books in libraries?Raman has allergy towards Tamil literature.That is why his comments go like these.In the golden days of Anna Nootraandu Noolagam,I used to find lot of youngsters there.When I was serving in a rural branch of a bank,I could read Kambaramayanam thoroughly during my leisure time.The beauty of the world is in the eyes of the beholder.

அடுத்த முறை டெக்ஸ்சாஸ் போகும்போது மறக்காமல் நூலகம் சென்று பார்க்கவும் .

Raman, I don’t give it to you fully. I have never left TN till date and don’t even have a passport. The largest literary event(s) in my life are the book fairs. But I assure you that there are lot of good books written and printed in Tamil and lot of good books available in India written by foreign authors (both translated and in English). I have good collection of books at least 10+ on every topic like science, maths, religion, philosophy etc. At least 30% are Tamil books. So it is incorrect to ignore this section of books. Moreover, a book in native language aids the reader more than anything else. It triggers the thought process instantly. Only if we buy and encourage the market for such books, more will come out. But our people buy yoga, ayurveda, astrology, crime novels etc and don’t give a damn about good books.
Even in state libraries, I have seen good books from medical science to computer programming. I am talking about a village library here. But those books are untouched and fresh. Even after Java 6 release, they had Java 1.4 book. I asked, them why. They replied that book itself was never used. Why spend another 500/- on the next version! They said books like “Aavi Ulagam”, “Varmakkalai Ragasiyam”, “Mooligai Maruthuvam” etc were frequently borrowed books (that time Indian movie came, that’s why varmakalai book was in that list!). If people are “amused” by something, that becomes popular and the “absolute democracy” of “free market” tilts towards that direction and hence a positive feedback is created. State can intervene and break the feedback cycle. But it is too busy to uplift poor men like Ramdev, Sri Sri, Jaggi and Mallaiah. So it is now up to the people to break this cycle.
The reason I praise USSR books are, they were non-commercial. Had no religious touch. Not even political tilt in general books on science or story books. Good paper quality, cheap and had interesting writing and pictures. Available in native language (they did the translation out of their own money to educate us!). Science books printed in India during that era too had similar qualities. I have a very old book on Atomic science priced Rs. 0.75/-. It is around 300 pages and it is a Tamil book written and printed in India. Can we buy such books today?

It is because you developed reading habit when you were young and that was possible due to your parents. What about poor kids in villages who come from a family which has no reading habit at all. they join cricket and movie club.
Ever wondered why people borrow Kolam design books? What is the age groups of people who are borrowing those books? Why young people are not going there?
There is nothing to offer young readers! Good comics ,picture books….?
A reading habit should be created first , then they will move to science/social/economic books when they grow.
Libraries select books written by party men, who write useless books under the blanket of Tamil literature.
6-9 year olds should get a habit of going to library. Only that can change the society. Otherwise cricket,movie clones will have a knowledge to celebrate Ajit son’s first birthday.

Now a days most of the middle class kids dont know to read Tamil . I bought some books and donated to my vilage library and then informed to teenager next door. Reply I got was,she doesnt know to read Tamil books.
So we need library with English books as well.

Raman like other haters of Tamil language conveys the notion that 450 crores were wasted on Semmozhi conference.He is asking me to go to a library at Texas to know how well such libraries are maintained.He did not want to know what happened during the Semmozhi conference and what infrastructural facilities Coimbatore city got on the eve of the Semmozhi conference out of the budgeted allocation of 500 crores.
First,about the Conference.7000 delegates from over 50 countries including USA,Singapore,South Africa,Canada,Greece,Russia, Switzerland and Malaysia participated.1020 papers were selected for presentation.Detailed papers were presented under 55 titles.More than 25% of the paper presenters were from foreign countries.Some of the prominent language experts were Prof.Schittman(USA),Prof.Jean-Luc Chevilland(France),Prof.Ulrika Niklas(Germany),Lisa Moore(IBM),Anna Alexeeva and Alexander Dubianskiy(Russia)Tamil scholar V.Sivathambi(SriLanka,UNESCO Director Armoogam Parasuraman.Senior Minister of State for Education,Singapore S.Iswaran inagurated Tamil internet Conference.Ashok Parpola(Finland)whose magnum opus,”Deciphering the Indus script”(1994) was awarded the Kalaignar Karunanidhi Classical Tamil Award.Tamil scholar George Hart(USA)presented a paper on Sangam literature.Rononjoy Adhikari and Kavitha Gangal from Institute of Mathematical Science,who are working on a Mathematical model to relate the Indus script with the Dravidian language were involved in the debate on scripts.Plenary sessions,symbosia,special lectures and presentation of papers took place in the 5 day event.23 conference halls were used.Museum hosting more than 700 artifacts detailing the history and forms the Tamil language has taken was there.Bookfair with the participation of 130 publishers was held.Handicrafts exibition cum fair was arranged.Procession with 40 floats (INIYAVAI NARPADHU)showcasing the greatness of Tamil civilization was conducted.2000 folklore artists from 40 cultural troups performed their skills of ancient arts and dances in the procession.CM Karunanidhi invited suggestions from Tamil scholars and political leaders for improvement and usage of Tamil language.Some of the suggestions extended were;-
1)Tamil should become the language of science.(2)Tamil Development Department should focus on propagation of Tamil in other states and other countries.(3)Priority in employment opportunities should be given to students who study their courses in Tamil medium(4)Importance should be given to Tamil in higher education.Karunanidhi issued a GO giving priority in employment in Tamilnadu Govt jobs to engineering students who do their study in Tamil medium.The first set of engineering students from Anna University from Tamil medium stream got the priority announced by him.
Infrastructure Coimbatore City got on the eve of the conference;-
26 crores was spent to improve 76 roads over a stretch of 71 km.Pavements for pedestrians were provided on major thoroughfares.Much more complex exercise of taking all overhead electrical cables underground was carried out on the arterial Avinashi Road,Kamarajar Salai and Tiruchi Road(NH67).Three road projects pending for long were taken up.Two of these involved linking Avinashi Road with Tiruchi Road.The third connected Avinashi Road with 100 feet road at Avarampalayam.Four laning of Tiruchi Road,a bus terminus at Mettupalayam Road and a drinking water scheme for Kavunampalayam Municipality and Vadavalli Town Panchayat were undertaken.The corporation spent 4.8 crore to install 275 lamp-posts with two bulbs of 250 watts each on Avinashi Road and 151 posts on Tiruchi Road.High mast lamps were installed in 19 places at a cost of Rs 96.4 lakhs.To provide water supply to the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex (Venue of the Conference)and surrounding areas Rs 90.3 crore was spent.(Not for the Conference but a permanent arrangement).A project to create botanical garden on 160 acres has been initiated.Roadside parks and greenery along footpaths were developed on public-private partnership basis at a cost of around Rs 8 crore.Garbage collection and traffic regulation were streamlined.Compound walls around the major roads were painted with Tamil cultural symbols.A 10 km stretch of the arterial Avinashi Road from VOC grounds to the airport has been transformed in terms of infrastructure and aesthetics.Steel shelters at bus stops,stainless steel traffic police pedestals fitted with fan and lights,new pavements and parking spaces were new additions.
One non-government and neutral print media wrote as follows;-

Raman has repeated his own opinion again and again.I read Kambaramayanam not for its spiritual/religious values but to enjoy the beauty of Kambar”s poetry.Remember,I read it in the local library of a village by name Erumaipatti near Namakkal when I was 30 years old and not after retirement.During my tenure of 3 and 1/2 years in that village,I was involved in Tamil Ilakkiya Mandram started with the help of few friends in that village.We used to conduct monthly meetings by inviting Tamil scholars.I gave a lecture by illustrating a poem of Kambar comparing it with a poem in Silappadhigaram and how these two illustrations describing the beauty of nature have been brought out by Kannadasan in one of his poems.As told by Hisfeet,even village libraries are having very good collection of books in all subjects.I used to spend at least 2 to 3 hours at Connemara Library when I was 23 years old (When I served in a Chennai city branch)I used to read English poetry written by Indian authors in numerous volumes published by Writers” Workshop,Kolkata.Because of my familiarity with Writers”Workshop books only,I came to know about two valuable books by P.Lal.P.Lal has done transliteration of Valmiki Ramayanam and Viyasa”s Mahabharatham in English verse by verse. May be the upkeep of the books and the building at Connemara Library may not be up to the mark.Neverthless this library has wonderful collections of books in all subjects.Every one may not have the opportunity to visit libraries in foreign countries.But I utilized my stay at Mumbai to become member of the British Council.By virtue of my Faculty Member position at our bank”s training center at Mumbai for about 3 years (1985-88)when I was 38-41 years old,I could well utilize our bank”s institutional membership with British Council Library for my benefit/my students” benefit.Yes,Raman.I borrowed and read some books from the library at Austin during my two months stay there in 2011.Do encourage the youth to go to libraries and to have their antenna wide open.What is the status of my personal suggestion to you to read the ebook version of “Mother India” by Katherine Mayo about 3 years back?
