RSYF condemns Delhi police’s brutal attack on JNU’s leftist students

The Revolutionary Students – Youth Front (RSYF) strongly condemns the brutal attack carried out by the Delhi Police on left-wing student organizations at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi.
Every year, JNU conducts student union elections. In preparation for this year’s election, a meeting of student representatives (general body meeting – GBM) was held on October 16 to form the election committee. During this meet, members of the RSS-backed student organization ABVP attacked the student leaders. In this assault, the student union President’s clothes were torn, and a female comrade sustained a serious head injury.
Even after 48 hours of the incident, the Delhi Police has not filed an FIR against the ABVP attackers. In protest, all left-wing student organizations marched to the nearby police station on October 18.
At the entrance of the police station, the students were brutally assaulted by the police. The police kicked them, tore their clothes, and verbally abused them with caste-based slurs before arresting them. Most of the attackers were policemen in plain clothes. The detained students were released the next day.
Since the BJP came to power in Delhi, there has been a continuous attempt to suppress the democratic space within JNU by trying to abolish the student union elections. The university administration, ABVP, and the police have been collectively carrying out severe attacks on progressive and left-wing student organizations that are fighting to defend democracy on campus. This incident is a continuation of that pattern.
Therefore, all student organizations must unite and raise their voices to ensure that the student union elections are conducted immediately. Only by doing so can the democratic spirit of the university be preserved.
We demand that the Delhi Government:
Ban the RSS-backed hooligan organization ABVP from the JNU campus!
Take immediate action against the police officers who attacked the students!
Let’s raise our voices together!
